The Classic Gin Martini became all the rage in the 1920's and 1930's. Here's how to make the gin drink that will leave guests wanting more.

Things You’ll Need

* 4 parts gin
* 1 part dry vermouth
* Cracked ice
* Martini Shaker
* Glass
* Garnish of choice

Assembling the Drink

1. Place the cracked ice, gin and dry vermouth into the martini shaker.
2. Cap the shaker and shake vigorously until the drink is well mixed.
3. Pour through a straining lid into an awaiting glass.
4. Garnish with a twist of lemon peel or cocktail onion.

Chill the Glass

One way to impress the guests is to keep martini glasses chilled. Simply pop them in the freezer 20 minutes before serving cocktails and they’ll form a nice frosty finish.

What Exactly is Dry?

How dry a gin martini is all about the amount of vermouth mixed into the drink. The less vermouth poured into the shaker, the drier the martini. 4 parts gin to 1 part martini is considered medium dry. 6 parts to 1 is considered medium dry. 8 parts to one is very dry and 12 parts to one is considered downright arid.

Lemon Drop Martini

The Lemon Drop Martini is a very sweet and lemony drink that came into vogue during the 1970s in California. It is now a favorite drink of the West Coast. The drink was developed at a now defunct bar called Henry Africa's in San Francisco, a well-known singles bar. At Henry Africa's bar, they developed and pushed "girl drinks" - drinks that are potent, yet sweet enough to cover the taste of alcohol. Think of the lemon drop candies!

This is the absolute best lemon drop martini! It is a perfect combination of sweet and sour. We must give thanks to whatscookingamerica.net for this recipe!

1 1/2 ounces vodka
1/2 ounce orange liqueur (Triple Sec, Grand Marnier, Cointreau, etc.)
1 teaspoon superfine sugar*
3/4 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
Ice cubes
Superfine sugar for dipping
Twisted peel of lemon

* Superfine sugar is instantly dissolving sugar that is typically used in drinks. If you want to avoid the shaking, make a Basic Simple Syrup Recipe to use in place of the sugar.

Mix the vodka, orange liqueur, sugar, and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice; shake well (supposedly the cocktail is to be shaken 40 times to make sure the sugar is well blended).

Pour strained liquor into sugar-rimmed martini glass and garnish with a twisted peel of lemon.

NOTE: To create a sugar-rimmed glass, take a lemon wedge and rub the drinking surface of the glass so it is barely moist. Dip the edge of the glass into the superfine sugar.

1/4 teaspoon lemon juice, for garnish
lemon slice, for garnish
sugar, for garnish

Pomegranate Martini Directions

Wet the rim of the cocktail glass with the lemon juice. Place sugar in a saucer and dip the rim of the cocktail glass into the saucer, to produce a ring of sugar stuck to the lemon juice as a decorative rim around the glass. Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Add ice so that the shaker is about a third full (ice plus ingredients). Shake for 20 seconds. Strain into a cocktail glass. Squeeze a couple of drops from the lemon slice into the glass, then garnish the side of the cocktail glass with the slice of lemon.

Like James Bond with his Vesper, Hemingway, too, had his special martini: The Montgomery. Named after the World War II British General, Sir Bernard Law Montgomery, General of the British Eighth Army, who would not attack unless he outnumbered the enemy fifteen to one, Hemingway's martini contains that same proportion of gin to vermouth. Hemingway did have a second version of his favorite martini. It is is really more of a cocktail in a martini glass.

The Montgomery

3 ounces Gordon's Gin
1 teaspoon, plus a few drops Noilly Prat vermouth

Pour ingredients into an ice-filled shaker. Shake, then strain into a martini glass. Place filled glasses in the freezer until ready to serve. Garnish with olive.

Hemingway's Floridita Daiquiri:

2 ounces light rum
2 ounces grapefruit juice
1 ounce fresh lime juice
1 ounce simple syrup

Mix in cocktail shaker, pour over crushed ice.

Frank Sinatra Martini at www.MartiniWarehouse.com

This drink originated in Philadelphia, adapted by Michael S. Berlinger, but its popularity faded as the bar that created it changed ownership. This drink can be considered a martini, but make sure to hold the olive. It is a rather refreshing, sweet cocktail that is best enjoyed in the summer time. Light a fine cigar and puff away throughout the day. Frank enjoyed the fine life, and good cigars were no exception to the rule.

Rent some of Sinatra's films and invite a few friends over for a celebratory screening party. Some of his most famous movies include "From Here to Eternity," "The Man with the Golden Arm" and "The Manchurian Candidate."

Celebrate Frank Sinatra!

3 oz dry gin
3/4 oz Blue Curacao liqueur
1 oz sweet and sour mix
